Albert "Al" J. Otto, AIFA®, CBFA
Al is a Consultant to Shepherd Kaplan LLC. He also consults nationally to corporations on plan design, investment management, governance and revenue utilization matters. Over a 37-year career, Al has become a widely published author and speaker on issues related to plan fees, target-date strategies, and retirement plan instruments. Al has been recognized by Federal Courts as an expert on 401(k) plan fees, and has served as an expert witness for seven significant federal fiduciary breach lawsuits. Al began advising 401(k) plans in 1984, and earned an Accredited Investment Fiduciary Analyst™ (AIFA®) designation in 2006. In 2015 he earned the Certified Behavioral Finance Analyst (CBFA) certificate from the Allianz Global Investors Center for Behavioral Finance. The program focuses on developing an understanding of key behavioral principles and how to translate them into behavioral solutions using the PlanSucess Behavioral Audit Tool. He currently serves on two non-profit boards and earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech, and was a President’s Fellow at Georgia Tech.
